An Open Letter to Nashvillians

Vijay Kumar

Dear Friends,

I am Vijay Kumar, and I am running for the 5th District Congressional seat  presently held by Jim Cooper. I have lived in Nashville for twenty-one years.

If you believe, as I do, that Congress has failed to take leadership on the issues of illegal immigration, taxation, English as our official language, our economy, healthcare reform, abortion, and the War on Terror, then I hope you share my belief that it is time for new leadership.

As an immigrant, I know firsthand the value of what it means to come to America lawfully. I am grateful for being given the opportunity to live the American dream.

Why I Left the Left

Vijay Kumar's interview in Frontpage Magazine

FP: Vijay Kumar, welcome back to Frontpage Interview.

Kumar: Thank you.

FP: In our last interview, we discussed the anti-Sharia program you are running on. Today I would like to focus on your political journey from being inside the Left to leaving the Left. Let’s begin with your background. In our last interview, you stated that you grew up in India, in a conservative middle class family, but you also said that you come from a Marxist family. This could, at first, appear to be a bit of a contradiction.

National Security/Foreign Policy

A ghost is haunting the world — the ghost of radical Islamist terrorism.  Cities worldwide have experienced terror, mass murders, and destruction by terrorists. Radical Islamists demand absolute theological, political, and cultural compliance. The conflict is between the divine law of Islam and secular Western laws.

War on Terror

We must recognize that we are engaged in a worldwide war against terrorists who use unconventional tactics. We have achieved all we can militarily and must recognize that there is no central front in this conflict.  That is, we cannot win the war in any particular place or location. This war must be waged on an ideological level as well as on a military level. Setting a timetable for withdrawal is setting a timetable for failure. The timetable for withdrawal is when we have achieved complete victory over forces determined to establish an Islamist front in the Middle East.

Immigration

We must secure our borders.  It is our national responsibility to our citizens.  We cannot shirk that responsibility. Unsecured borders are an emergency that requires our highest priority. The security of our borders is an economic issue, but equally important, an issue of national security.

We must work with The Department of Homeland Security so that they can arrest, detain, and deport those who seek to enter the United States illegally.

Health Care

Our health care system is an abysmal failure, because we have neglected to focus on preventative care and education. Creating universal health care by federal edict is a short-term solution.   We should first examine what has happened to the health care system in Great Britain.  After health care was nationalized, the quality of care deteriorated significantly.

Taxes

The "Fair Tax" is a fair tax.  We should support it. The federal deficit is caused by the government overdrawing its account, not because Americans are under taxed. Federal spending is out of control. We must eliminate deficit spending.  The “Death Tax” is double dipping at the expense of those who work hard and save all their lives, so that their children may benefit. We must eliminate that tax.

Economy

Ronald Reagan is my guide. He was a proponent of free trade.
We must support free trade, but there must be quid pro quo–a fair and equal exchange.  Properly applied globalization levels the playing field, enabling Americans to purchase goods and services at competitive rates.

Education

Let parents decide what’s in their children’s best interests. Returning K–12 education to local control will enable parents to have more clout. We must reduce federal bureaucratic interference in our schools. Bureaucracies are usually impersonal and ineffective. Local control could also lessen the choke-hold that education unions have on the education system. The interests of teachers’ unions are often at odds with parental interests. Parents (and by extension, their children) too often get the short end of the deal. The federal government and teachers’ unions should not have more control over children than parents have.

English as the Official Language

The Founders of our nation were from England. All our founding documents are in English. Besides these facts, there is even more compelling reason for codifying English into law. A common language is what holds a multi-ethnic nation together. Its common goal is effective communication. Currently laws are in play requiring ballots and numerous other documents to be in multiple languages. This practice is detrimental to the stability of the nation.

Family

Acknowledge that “Family is the very foundation of civilization.” This means the traditional family. Without a strong foundation of traditional families, we as a nation are teetering on a house of cards.
Marriage should be defined across the nation as between one man and one woman. Laws against polygamy and homosexual marriage and unions should be maintained and zealously enforced.

Right to Life

Since the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, taking life in the womb has been legal in America.  It is estimated that prior to 1973, there were about 100,000 illegal abortions a year.  In 1974 the number rose to around 900,000, and since 1975 each year’s total has topped one million.

First Amendment Rights

Freedom of speech is essential to a free, democratic country. We must oppose all efforts to stifle this most basic of human freedoms. Hate speech legislation is a gross infringement upon this most basic human freedom. It relies upon subjective judgments about what is and what is not motivated by hate, so we must say “No” to hate speech legislation.

Second Amendment Rights

The intent of our Founding Fathers was that we have the constitutionally guaranteed means by which to defend ourselves against our own government as well as the defense of life and property. Any discussion of recreational hunting insofar as the Second Amendment is a smokescreen.

Foreign Policy: INDIA

India is the largest democracy in the world.  We must continue to support India in its fight against terrorism. The Kashmiri Hindus, the native citizens of Kashmir for centuries, have been reduced to refugee status in their own homeland.  We must continue to support the Kashmiri Hindus in their struggle to coexist peacefully in their homeland.
