NASHVILLE (April 14, 2008):  “Because Congress has failed to take leadership on the issues of illegal immigration, taxation, English as our official language, our economy, healthcare reform, abortion, and the War on Terror, the time is ripe for new leadership.  I hereby announce my candidacy for the 5th District Congressional seat of Tennessee.” With these words, longtime Nashville resident Vijay Kumar announced his congressional bid, challenging incumbent Jim Cooper (D) before an enthusiastic group of supporters at the Shoney’s restaurant in Bellevue on Saturday.

The KumarForCongress campaign is well underway. A “mince no words” candidate, Mr. Kumar’s agenda is unambiguous.

On the War on Terror: We must not substitute short-term solutions for long-term goals.  We must recognize and engage the ideological battle, so that our military and political leaders are no longer baffled and surprised by events in the Middle East and elsewhere. The first rule of war is “know thy enemy.”

On health care: Our health care system is broken, and bandage won’t fix it.  Consumer based health care is the answer.  When consumers can purchase affordable health care privately, businesses will be more competitive and everyone benefits.

On illegal immigration: We must secure our borders.  This is an emergency requiring immediate action.  We cannot continue to allow the influx of millions of illegal immigrants who live in the shadows, flaunt our laws, and create a state-within-a-state, a culture-within-a-culture.  For every legal immigrant, we must make every effort to engender pride in the American way of life.

On taxes and the federal deficit:  The FairTax is a fair tax.  Lower taxes and simplify the tax code.  The federal deficit is caused by the government overdrawing its account. Americans are not under taxed.

On abortion and family:  I am pro life, unwavering and without compromise.  The two-parent family is the framework upon which civil society is built.

On foreign policy: Israel is our ally against Islamic terrorism.  The two state “solution” is no solution.  Only strength will guarantee peace.

We must continue to support India in its fight against radical terrorism. The Kashmiri Hindus, the native citizens of Kashmir for centuries, have been reduced to refugee status in their own homeland.  We must continue to support the Kashmiri Hindus in their struggle to peacefully coexist in their homeland.

“I’m very glad to see an immigrant stand up and fight for American values,” said Julia Raffety of Nashville.

“I like what I see in Vijay,” observed Rob Frazier. “His views on foreign policy are quite refreshing. He is right when he says we have done all we can for the ever-feuding Iraqis and should concentrate on the group that has consistently supported us and demonstrated the ability to govern themselves - the Kurds.”

“I hope Vijay Kumar will follow in the footsteps of newly elected Governor of Louisiana, Bobby Jindal,” said Norman Berdichevsky. Mr. Kumar has been married to his wife, Robin, for twenty-five years.  They have one son, age 17.  He and his family are members of the Bellevue Community Church.  He’s a conservative, family values man who plainly speaks his mind.  “I see no reason to mince words under the guise of political correctness.”
